ABOUT GIRLS 2001-2003

About girls was my graduating work for Lahti Institute of Design, where I studied my Bachelor of Art degree. About girls consists of about 80 photographs that were taken during some three years.

I have three little sisters with whom I have lived and grown up. Having spent such a long time in an intense girls´ community has probably had a great influence on my way of seeing things as well as my work as a photographer. I have photographed my sisters ever since I first started taking pictures.

The end of the 20th century showed us a growing discussion on the problems of female body as a material for images. In About Girls I wanted to represent girls not as objects and something desirable, but imperfect yet satisfied with themselves. Energetic feeling and absurd humor are important  aspects in my photography. Although the problematics of representing women and the influence from women´s studies are relevant in this series, the photographs also speak of things like friendship between girls and growing up in a loving, accepting community.
